Thoughts on the 20th Anniversary of 9/11
By Editor Becky Watts

ZEBULON - 9/11 is always a somber time at my house even though we didn’t personally lose any close friends or loved ones in the attack. Our experience started after… when our soldiers went overseas to fight those who attacked us on their own turf.

Some years, I am reflective. Today, I am the Angry American who remembers watching those towers come down as we watched our 2 year old play and I held a new born baby in my arms knowing that my husband would be called to serve our country in the near future.

Seeing the debacle in Afghanistan has made me angry, but it does not diminish the service and sacrifice of our soldiers and their families over the past 20 years. You fought the bad guys over there to keep them from attacking us (again) over here.

Thank you for your service.

Thank you for your sacrifice.

Freedom is not and has NEVER been free.

I will continue to say thank you and speak aloud of your sacrifice. Especially on 9/11 every year.

Signed,
An Angry American Military Wife

Family Health Clinic Makes Changes on Locations for Treating Patients With and Without COVID-19

ZEBULON - We have big decisions to make… very hard decisions. We GREATLY value our family of patients and we also value candid and honest communication. ❤️ In order to better care for our very loyal existing patients and continue to be a much needed resource to our community in the fight against Covid-19 , we have to make TEMPORARY adjustments to how we operate.

As you all know, Covid-19 infections are again on the rise. We told you in the beginning of this, that we would not back down and that we would FIGHT this together. This has put us in a position of being one of a very few resources available to our community. We are stepping up and PROVIDING actual care and treatment to those with Covid-19.

After MUCH thought and deliberation we will be taking advantage of having two locations where we can serve our patients. Effective Monday August 23rd, we will be servicing our patient base that is NOT affected by Covid-19 out of our Pike County office and we will be providing the MUCH needed treatment of Covid-19 out of our McDonough office. We do NOT want to inconvenience our patients but we feel that our existing patient base should be able to access their normal healthcare needs with as little interruption as possible by Covid-19. This also gives us the opportunity to give better and more dedicated care to those who are struggling with Covid-19. Please know that this is TEMPORARY! We will have our AMAZING staff rotating between both offices. This will allow our established patients to see the provider of their choice AND to provide relief to our staff from the relentless and exhaustive grind of treating Covid-19.

Pike County Office: This office will be used for primary and immediate care needs outside of Covid-19 such as Primary Healthcare, Well Visits, Chronic Illness Management, Abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea (without respiratory symptoms), Physicals, Medication Refills, Routine Labs, Ultrasounds, Acute Injuries, Fracture Care, Procedures, Cough (more than 3 weeks), Anything not Covid-19 or Covid-19 symptom related

McDonough Office: This office will see and treat viral respiratory illnesses and/or Covid-19 symptoms and infections. If you are seen at our McDonough office and you do not have Covid-19, we will diagnose and treat your illness at the time of care. We will not be addressing non-related issues (that will be seen in our Pike office) during this visit. If you have the following symptoms we will see you at our McDonough office: Fever, Acute cough, Shortness of breath, Acute upper respiratory symptoms, Loss of taste or smell, and Abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea (with respiratory symptoms). (A previous Covid-19 infection or vaccination does not exclude you from these symptoms.)

We will continue to see as many patients as possible at our McDonough office. If we reach capacity, we will post on our Facebook page. We realize our patient demographic spans across several counties and this will be a commute and inconvenience to some of our family of patients. While this is not the perfect solution, it is TEMPORARY and we feel this is the best way to meet the needs of ALL of our patients. Your outpouring of support the past year has proven that you trust us to do the best for you and our community. We trust you the same way and we know that you will be patient with us as we all navigate this national pandemic.

Family Health Clinic. Open 7 Days a Week. 770-288-2822.

Money Recovered From the Trash

ZEBULON - Jody Harper at Amwaste got a call from a customer who had lost $1,000 when it ended up in the trash, and her trash had already been collected this morning. “I was crying myself as I was talking to her,” she said. The cash was in white bags with blue tags, and the woman asked if she could go digging through the dumped trash in a roll off container in order to find the cash.

Jody told her that she couldn’t because of safety reasons, but that she would have her guys look for it. Bob and Raymond were on top of the trash in the roll off container looking for the bags of cash and found them! “I was so thrilled for her,” Jody said. “It was a good day!”

Jody said that she has received calls about missing teeth and even an engagement ring over the years, and the stories haven't always ended like this. But today was a happy ending!

Pike County Times Reauthorizes 2017 Freedom
of Information Act (FOIA) Request
By Editor Becky Watts

ZEBULON - Pike County Times became acquainted with Clayton Kuhles from MIA Recoveries, Inc. because of his work to bring home the airmen from the "Hot as Hell" crash that brought WWII Bombardier 1st Lt. Robert "Eugene" Oxford home to Concord in 2017. Kuhles discovered the crash site in 2006 in a remote part of India and the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) brought home remains from 1st Lt. Oxford. You can read more about his long journey home to Concord in 2017 by clicking here.

Pike County Times reported that the DPAA awarded a high bidder with a contract for Northeastern India Recovery Work in 2017. The solicitation was specifically to follow up on recovery of remains of WWII service members from sites in Northeast India where Kuhles had a lot of experience in recovery and a bid that was $428,000 less than the company who was awarded the contract. Kuhles placed a complaint with the Naval Inspector General, and Pike County Times placed a FOIA for information pertaining to this contract.

Pike County Times received an emailed letter from the Department of Defense FOIA Division advising that it regretted the delay in completing the request and asking if Pike County Times would still like to receive the information that has been requested along with its current caseload of 3,486 requests on August 28, 2020. (This request was one of 2,961 open requests on July 9, 2019.) The letter read as follows: "...we understand that due to the passage of time and changing needs of requesters, it is possible that you no longer have an interest in the documents you requested. Therefore, we ask that you review your enclosed request and confirm your continued interest in the requested information September 30, 2020." Pike County Times sent a letter authorizing the continuation of this FOIA by email today. When the information is finally received, Pike County Times will review and update the article. BREAKING NEWS: Pike County Times Investigates
Former County Manager Ron Alexander
By Editor Becky Watts

ZEBULON - Pike County Times has walked through the hiring of many county managers over the years. Some employments have gone smoothly, and some have not. Pike County has a reputation as a bit of a revolving door of late with the exception of John Hanson staying for six years with Bobby Bickley staying six months before resigning and Ron Alexander resigning after only five months on the job. There was no exposé after Bobby Bickley left; it just wasn’t a good fit for him as county manager. But there were rumors of problems while Ron Alexander was here as county manager. Click here for more. This is the first of a completed three part series.

Griffin Police Department and the Media - PART I
By Editor Becky Watts

GRIFFIN - Pike County Times has covered news for Griffin and Spalding County when time allowed over the past several years. This investigation began because the Griffin Police Department (PD) began issuing press releases only on Facebook and not to the press at the end of January of 2019. The policy has since changed, then changed back, and then changed again, but lately Griffin PD has begun issuing regular press releases to the press again. In the course of this discussion over whether something can be called a “press release” if it is not issued and sent to the press, Pike County Times decided to investigate whether there was a difference in how the local and Atlanta media were treated as well as seeing if any news media were singled out for special treatment. This is the first part of a four part series of articles. Click here for more.
